The Binnenhof Complex in The Hague, residence to the Dutch Senate and the House of Representatives, is an eight century old monument that is always in active use. After a period of intensive use the Binnenhof shows many technical shortcomings. A large renovation is necessary to improve security and working conditions for users and visitors. And to preserve the cultural heritage for the long term.
Level Acoustics & Vibration is responsible for the acoustic design of the renovation of Binnenhof, for the buildings of the complex that house the House of Representatives. Five out of the seven buildings have a monumental status. Goal is to meet the nowadays acoustic requirements for offices and public spaces. For the monumental buildings, with mainly lightweight wooden constructions, this is a challenge. Acoustic solutions to improve the sound insulation and room acoustics are developed within the monumental conditions and characteristics of the buildings.
To meet the high standards set for the indoor climate conditions, considerably more climate installations have to be implemented. To integrate the air handling units and dry coolers, specific vibro-acoustic solutions are designed, especially for the lightweight buildings. Besides, special attention is paid to the design of wall, floor and ceiling penetrations by air ducts.
The room acoustics of spaces in which more multifunctional use will be added, like the Old Chamber, The Central Passageway and The Schepelhal, are designed to meet the acoustics needed for the diverse range of events.
